WHAT DOES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH MEAN?
|
|
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The celebration was created to recognize the positive impact that Hispanic Americans have left on the country. "Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America," according to the official government website. It takes place from September 15-October 15 every year.
As of 2017, the Hispanic population in the U.S. is 58.9 million—the largest minority group in the country—and is projected to reach 111 million by 2060, according to the 2018 Census report.
HOW DO PEOPLE CELEBRATE IT?
The official government website typically keeps a calendar of highlighted activities hosted throughout the United States, from concerts to book and art festivals and parades. A majority of the festivities held throughout the United States are family-friendly and occur at the local level and many are free. In October 2019, for instance, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., hosted a screening and Q&A for the documentary Exiled, America’s Deported Veterans. Official tourism sites for cities such as Miami and Miami Beach have also offer neatly-curated lists for how to celebrate.
In 2020, however, most of those events will likely be virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you're staying close to home, you might consider getting festive with a menu full of Latin American dishes. You can also make it a point to support Latina-owned businesses. And there's never been a better time to relax with a good book by a Spanish-language author that takes you into someone else's experience such as these immigration stories largely by Latinx authors.

COVID-19 RECOVERY ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
|
|
Hillsborough County helps small businesses through hard times with financial assistance that won't need to be repaid. This is a financial assistance program, not a loan. Therefore, the funds do not need to be paid back. Awarded funds can be spent on any business-related expense, such as employees' wages, mortgage, rent, vendor invoices, utility bills, payroll, and other costs, so long as these expenses are not paid for by insurance or another federal assistance program. Receipt of other local, state, or federal assistance (such as One Tampa or PPP/EIDL relief loan funds) will not impact a business' eligibility for this program.
Fixed award amounts are determined by the number of employees for each business:
- 0 to 2 employees - $10,000
- 3 to 10 employees - $20,000
- 11 to 20 employees - $30,000
- 21 employees and more - $40,000
Applications will be accepted through Dec. 1, 2020, or until funding is exhausted.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Outreach team is looking for volunteers to write letters of encouragement and hope to our first responders and patients at Tampa General Hospital.
As you know, many patients are left by themselves, lonely and in the care of strangers. If any of you have been to the hospital lately the scenery is not what we were used to. Patients for the most are left by themselves, and without any interaction from the world. Some might no even have cellular phones, TVs, nor iPads or computers. In such a difficult time, we are asking our Hispanic Community to join forces with our team and the Tampa General Hospital in South Tampa.
They are receiving letter of hope for their patients and the staff. If you feel compelled please write and encouraging letter to:
Tampa General Hospital

PO Box 1289
Tampa Florida 33601
Spanish written letters are encouraged as well. Please take a picture and send it to: aishka.lugo@tampahispanicchamber.com
