Dear Colleague,
Remember the Bermuda Triangle?
We don’t hear about it much anymore. (Probably because somebody invented GPS.) But ships used to sail into the Bermuda Triangle and never come out. Nobody ever figured out what happened to them or why.
Something similar happens in the world of Human Resources—especially to smaller companies and organizations.
Because there’s a dangerous moment in the evolution of any organization when it’s big enough to face difficult personnel problems ... but not quite big enough to hire a full-time HR manager.
You might call this the Bermuda Triangle of Human Resources.
Fortunately, the government recognizes this problem and exempts companies with under 50 employees from some (but not all) of its more burdensome employment laws.
But organizations with five, ten, or twenty employees still face some of the same problems as Fortune 500 companies. Problems with compensation and benefits. With recruitment and hiring. With discipline and terminations. And so on.
What these organizations do not have, however, is a fully-staffed Human Resources department to handle all these difficulties. That’s when it makes sense to outsource your HR functions. And you can do it in a variety of ways.
Perhaps you simply need someone you can call whenever a difficult employment question comes up. Or maybe you need a consultant who can become your “virtual” HR Department, handling every personnel problem or task that needs to be done. Some consultants will even show up at your office—two, three, or even five days a week—to serve as your HR manager on a contractual basis until your organization is big enough to staff your own department.
In recent weeks, we’ve helped a variety of small organizations navigate the Bermuda Triangle of HR. A church in California. A farm in Massachusetts that helps feed the poor. A non-profit organization that works on prison reform.
Small organizations like this not only need this kind of help ... they deserve it.
After all, Starbucks started with a single coffee shop. Facebook was launched in a dorm room. Apple in a two-car garage. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow—as long as they don’t get sued by a disgruntled employee along the way!
So if you find yourself in need of Human Resources advice or help, I hope you’ll give me a call at 202-333-0644 or send an email to Sharon@TrainersAndConsultants.net. I’ll give you the names of three qualified HR consultants who can do the job you need at a price you can afford.
Think of me as your GPS for getting out of the Bermuda Triangle of Human Resources!
Sincerely,
Sharon Armstrong
