Dear Colleague,
The other day I asked my husband what his goals for 2022 were and he said:
“Survival.”
Now that’s what I call managing expectations!
But my husband’s lackluster response reminded me of an article I recently saw in The New York Times. It was, in fact, the single most widely read article published in the Times last year. The title?
“There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing.”
According to the article, “languishing” is the state that exists on the spectrum of mental health halfway between depression and flourishing.
“Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness,” said the article. “It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield.” If 2020 was a year of anguish, the article concluded, 2021 was the year of languish.
It made me wonder: Can organizations languish, too?
I think the answer is yes, and I think all of us have had the sensation of treading water over the past year as we’ve waited for things to “get better” or “get back to normal.” Recent events, however, have taught us that things are not only not getting better ... they may, in fact, be getting worse.
Fortunately, I have some good news. The Times article offered a simple solution for languishing. And it goes back to the question I asked my husband about his goals for the New Year.
According to the Times, the cure for languishing is not to set grandiose goals or resolutions for the months ahead ... but merely to take one simple step.
Identify one manageable, achievable, realistic goal for your business and then, as Larry the Cable Guy likes to say, “Get’er done.”
- Are you having trouble with recruitment and retention of employees, for example?
-
- Do you have a high-potential employee who could benefit from coaching?
-
- Are you struggling with Zoom meetings ... or remote work in general?
-
- Are you overwhelmed with changes in HR rules and regulations related to the pandemic?
-
- Maybe you just need to write a new employee handbook or clear off some of the other routine HR projects that have been gathering dust on your desk since the Jurassic era.
If so, I encourage you to let me help you find a consultant, trainer, coach, or speaker who can help you “get’er done.” Call me at 202-333-0644 or send an email to Sharon@TrainersAndConsultants.net.
I’ll give you the names of at least three top professionals who can do the job at a price you can afford. (As always, there’s no charge to you for my service.)
You’ll be amazed at how good it will feel to cross just one thing off your “Important-stuff-I’ll-get-to-someday” list.
It could, in fact, lead to a domino effect of getting lots of important things done over the next year.
So if 2020 was the year of anguishing ... and 2021 was the year languishing ... let me help me make 2022 a year of flourishing for you, both personally and professionally!
Sincerely,
Sharon Armstrong
