Dear Colleague,
One of the truisms of the Human Resources field is that employees don’t leave a company ... they leave their boss.
Having conducted hundreds of exit interviews in my lifetime—and resigned from a few jobs of my own!—I can verify the accuracy of this statement.
No, these employees don’t usually come into the HR office and say, “I can’t survive another day with that son of a ... er, gun.”
But they do say things like, “I don’t feel appreciated” ... “We’re having some communication issues” ... “I’m feeling overwhelmed ... “I’m not getting the kind of direction and support I need” ... and so on.
All of these are code words for “Either he goes or I do!”
More training and accountability can often be the answer to these problems. Not just for the employee but also for the boss!
In a recent SHRM special report on retention, Kate Rockwood cited a McKinsey study showing that 52% of employees who resign their jobs do so because they don’t feel valued by their manager. Another SHRM study found that 84% of workers said poorly-trained managers create unnecessary work and stress.
According to Rockwood, this situation has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Remote working, for example, can lead to emails that arrive in the middle of the night with brusque demands that look a lot like bullying.
A manager at the office might poke his head in your door and say, “How’s that report coming, Jane? Please don’t forget we need it by Tuesday.” In an email the same manager might say: “Report due on Tuesday. Progress?”
No wonder we’re in the midst of “The Great Resignation!”
Fortunately, the Trainers & Consultants Referral Network gives you instant access to a wide range of managerial trainers, coaches, and consultants. Not just in remote working, but in every aspect of retention, recruitment, teamwork, leadership, communication, and all the areas your HR Department is dealing with today.
Just call me at 202-333-0644 or send an email to Sharon@TrainersAndConsultants.net. I’ll give you the names of at least three top professionals who can do the job you need at a price you can afford. (As always, there’s no charge to you for my service.)
Meanwhile, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I encourage you to give a hug to your HR manager. What with resignations, recruitment difficulties, and almost daily changes in pandemic policies, these folks are going through a difficult time. So give them a hug, a box of candy, or a bouquet of flowers.
Better yet, give them my telephone number so I can give them the help they need!
Sincerely,
Sharon Armstrong
