Trucking as a Dystopian Nightmare
Last November I highlighted a shortage of 80,000 truck drivers driven partially by the perceived coming automation of truck driving. The shortage and the recent rebellion are being driven strongly by working conditions. Already some of the most monitored workers, automated systems are not replacing workers but have "simply been brought in to manage declining working conditions."
An argument against higher wages is often that it would lead to automation. Is that a bad thing? Should truck driving be an increasingly crappy job for 15 years instead of a dignified one for 5-10 years if automation would arrive sooner?
