"Society requires economic literacy to avoid sliding into authoritarianism."

Foresight Friday
Following trends that are shaping potential futures

Good morning,
It has been an exciting week. On Monday I addressed the Economic Club of Tampa with a talk centered on the work of the Institute for Economic Evolution and was the first audience for a presentation of the Design Economic Framework. The next bit of news, below, is that Compass Magazine's latest issue has been posted and contains my article introducing the Design Economics Framework.

Some Quick Thoughts

  • It has almost been a year since Russia invaded Ukraine and the war is just getting started. The long-term global disruption and potential for escalation will unfortunately only increase as time goes on.
  • China has been caught with spy balloons, not just in the U.S. but flown over more than 40 countries. Between spy balloons, COVID and civil disruptions, and the reshoring of American manufacturing, Chinese relations with the West will likely get more strained.
  • Italy is the West's fastest-shrinking nation. These demographic shifts, among numerous countries, don't need higher birth rates but instead require modernized economic metrics that include social capital.

Without better economics, these global challenges will continue to grow.

Leveraging a Design Economics Framework to Disrupt Economics
via Compass Magazine
The February issue of Compass magazine, the global voice of professional futurists, has just published an article by Institute for Economic Evolution founder, Vinny Tafuro. This quarterly magazine shares the diverse voices of professional futurists from around the world and is publicly available online for free.

For economics to address twenty-first-century challenges and prepare for the future, the field must become more adaptive. Economics must simultaneously rely upon past experience while disregarding outdated frameworks. This proposal for design and speculative economics and outline of the Design Economics Framework attempts to address that challenge. By providing initial language and tools for interdisciplinary collaboration, we can shift how we think about and discuss economics, and how the field of economics operates within academia and society.

Speculative Futures, St. Petersburg
Winter Program with futurist, Joe Tankersley
Last summer the community here in Tampa Bay came together to create the Speculative Futures, St. Petersburg chapter. After a couple of in-person programs to introduce and discuss the idea, we decided that our first program of 2023 would be an introduction to foresight that would provide basic tools for anyone to begin integrating foresight in their strategic planning.

Using Foresight to Create Your Best Futures with Joe Tankersley
Foresight is a combination of rigorous research and strategic imagination. These tools can help you see beyond the short-term horizon to better anticipate opportunities and challenges. In this workshop you’ll learn how to set up your own foresight practice. Whether you’re an individual, nonprofit, traditional business, or community leader, strategic foresight can help you create your best futures.

I really hope you enjoy and are engaged by the Compass article and would love to hear your thoughts. Regardless of your knowledge of economics, the purpose of the Design Economics Framework is to make talking about the economy more common. If we can't or won't talk about economics, there is really no chance we can improve it.

Gratefully,
