WITH ALL THOSE POSTS AND HASHTAGS...
|
|
Dear Joanne,
Wednesday was International Women's Day. It seemed like every other social media post sported an IWD hashtag and a picture of a group of diverse women. With Wednesday behind us, we still have a month of Women's History Month to complete.
And, yet, how much progress did we make from last year's Women's Day? Not much. In fact, based on some industry data I've seen, we back slid. Last year, women founded companies received 1.9 percent of the venture capital invested in startups. In 2021 that number was 2.4 percent. But either way, the numbers are so ridiculously low.
There is good news. Although it depends on how you look at it. The pay equity gap has remained stable at 82 cents on the dollar. The bad news? We've made hardly any progress in 20 years. Stable but no progress...
In 2022, of the 5,403 Fortune 500 board members, 69 percent are male, and 78.5 percent are white. Women comprised 45 percent of all new Fortune 500 board appointments in 2021, a new high, while Black directors made up 26 percent of new appointees, slightly lower than 2020 when there was a surge.
Speaking, and the other visibility opportunities we offer our members, are designed to help support women on the path to business and career success. We're all in on special days, weeks, months and years designed to increase our understanding of the changes faced by some groups but sometimes, it feels like they come and go without any progress.

WomensNet founded the Amber Grant in 1998. The grant was set up with one goal in mind: to honor the memory of a very special young woman, Amber Wigdahl, who died at just 19 years old — before realizing her business dreams.
Today, WomensNet carries on that tradition, proudly giving away at least $30,000 every month in Amber Grant money. In recognition of the diversity of businesses owned by women, They also expanded their grant-giving to include “Marketing Grants,” “Business Category Grants,” as well as two “$25,000 Year End Grants.” More information and application here.
