Q&A with Dana Killon,
Author, Where The Shadows Dance
1) Tell us about your memoir.
Where the Shadows Dance is the story of how I became collateral damage in my alcoholic husband’s self-destruction. The stories of those of us on the sidelines of addiction are rarely told and I want to give voice to that experience because it is deserving of respect.
2) Why did you write?
Although I write fiction, I didn’t start with the intention of writing a memoir. I was journaling as a supplement to therapy. As an author, I knew I had a story in those painful pages, but I didn’t know if I had the courage to be so vulnerable, publicly. I wrote a first draft anyway, and as I wrote, I kept thinking about all the women I’ve known who’ve lived with regrets for things not done and all the women I’d met on the sidelines of addiction who had been silent about their pain like I was. It was then that I saw there was more than my sad experience of loss. I saw that if I could find my voice, if I could tell my story, I might be able to help others find their voices, too.
3) Is this a story only for people with addicts in their lives?
Although addiction is the lens through which I’m telling my story, there are several themes that play out, specifically, the ways women use silence as protection and the ways most of us have set ourselves aside because someone else’s needs seemed greater. Ultimately, this is a woman’s survival story. A woman’s story of using trauma to make herself better on the other side.
4) What do you hope readers take away from your story?
?
I’m hoping that by witnessing my vulnerability other women will see parts of themselves in a new way. I’m hoping they will feel a small bit of comfort that they are not alone and that there can be beauty on the other side of trauma. I don’t like what I experienced in parts of my marriage, but I know that I am better on the other side of it because I found my voice. I’m hoping other women will choose to no longer live in the shadows of pain.
