WHAT MAKES A GREAT STORY
by Daniel Roth
I reduced it to 2 words: Conflict and resolution. To me that’s what makes a good story.
I read thousands of scripts and manuscripts. The 3-act structure is really critical.
Not every book is the same, not everyone has the same story to tell, but this structure is critical to understand even if you don’t go with it.
This comes from Aristotle’s poetics:
25% is setup
50% is the confrontation
25% is the resolution
As someone said — first get them up the tree, then shake the tree, then get them down the tree.
It’s the same premise: Through the 3-act structure is the character arc. Where does the character start and where do they wind up at the end?
Google the Aristotle 3-act structure. It’s fundamental for storytelling.
The challenge is — how much information is relevant and when does it get injected into the story-line? Driving a stick shift car: there’s a delicate balance between the clutch — brake — accelerator.
It’s a delicate balance — how much information do you reveal and when do you reveal it? I will tell you, as I have for thousands of writers.
